Basic skills skating tips
1. Our first and foremost priority is the skater's safety, therefore helmets are strongly advised.
Remember, it's better to be safe :)
2. PARENTS: *Please do not step on the ice during your child's lesson.*
-This creates a safety hazard for parents and children as blades and fast speeding skaters are involved.
-This also creates a distraction for children and prevents them from listening and learning.
3. Our Basic Skills Classes are the foundation for your child's skating and necessary to also insure your
child's safety on the ice.
4. CHOOSING YOUR SKATES: The size of your skates are usually the same size as your street shoe if
not one size smaller.
MAKING THE SKATE FIT: Unlace your child's skate all the way to the bottom then pull out the tongue
before putting the foot in, which should feel snug and comfortable.
Thin socks are also recommended to make the foot feel snug and comfortable when learning to
skate.
5. BASIC ELEMENTS TAUGHT TO KIDS ARE:
OFF ICE:
* March around in skates
* Sitting down and standing up in skates
* Doing squats in skates
ON ICE:
* Marching in place
* Marching across the ice
* Sitting down and standing up
* Doing squats on ice
* Hopping in place
